Winter Wildlands Alliance

The Backcountry Snowsports Alliance played a leading role in the formation of the Winter Wildlands Alliance, the first and only national organization working to promote and preserve winter wildlands and a quality human-powered snow sports experience on public lands across the United States. In February 2000, BSA hosted a meeting 15 individuals representing grassroots groups from Idaho, Colorado, California and Nevada. As a result of this meeting, these groups joined forces to form the WWA as a coalition of activists who share ideas and resources in order to give a national voice to our issues.

Winter Wildlands builds relationships with grassroots snowsports and conservation groups, providing networking opportunities and useful resources to these groups. The Alliance publicizes national issues, garnering broad public support for urgent items. WWA maintains a national presence by communicating regularly with Forest Service, Park Service, and Congressional representatives, commenting on draft plans and encouraging agencies to adopt nonmotorized-friendly policies. The Winter Wildlands Alliance also provides useful information to activists through an online information clearinghouse and action alert network.
