Vail Expansion Spells Trouble For Backcountry Users
The BSA has jumped into the fray regarding the Vail Ski Area expansion. As part of a further mitigation measure to reduce the impact on area wildlife disturbed by the expansion, Vail Associates and the Colorado Division of Wildlife have made an agreement to close the Benchmark Bowl, Mushroom Bowl, and Mill Creek section of the Commando Run. This is one of the best and most popular ski routes in the state! There are few accessible Colorado high routes that take in such spectacular views in a low-risk avalanche alignment. The good news is that the Forest Service must agree to the proposal and currently does not support the closure. The bad news is if the lynx is listed as an endangered species, the Forest Service no longer has control of the closure. For this season, signs will inform users of the restriction but no tickets will be issues and Vail Associates will not pull ski passes. The BSA is fighting the closure and will let you know when action is needed.
Another effect of the Vail Expansion is the use of Lime Creek Road and Shrine Pass Road as the access point to remove timber from the Category III expansion. A new road would be created into the expansion area which could spell disaster for the Vail Pass management plan as it would go through non-motorized terrain. While it is too late to stop the creation of the road, the BSA has demanded that the Forest Service prohibit Vail Associates from using the new Category III access road, the Lime Creek Road and Shrine Pass Road after the opening date of the Vail ski area each year and to block access to the new road in order to discourage its use during the winter season.
